Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism is a developmental disability that usually appears during the first three years of a child's life. Autism is four times more
prevalent in boys than girls and knows no racial, ethnic or social boundaries. Family income, lifestyle or educational levels do not affect the chance of
occurrence.
Autism is often referred to as a spectrum disorder - a disorder in which symptoms can occur in any combination and with varying degrees of severity.
The SWLA Chapter of the Autism Society of America located in Lake Charles holds monthly parent support meetings, sponsors a summer camp for persons with autism and distributes information focused on building the capacity of the community, various organizations and families to support persons with autism in the home, school, community and work settings.
