Endowment Pledge reminders continue to be sent on a regular basis – with very good response. The staff and consultants of the Foundation met on March 19 to discuss and implement a Marketing and Prospecting Plan as well as Planned Events to identify and encourage individuals who have the potential to develop an endowment with the Foundation. Further prospecting plans have been identified and put in place. Staff plans to make prospecting calls during the month of April. Mission Based Advocacy On February 28, the Foundation, in collaboration with the Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation, presented a Mission-Based Advocacy workshop held at L’auberge du Lac. Suzy Sonnier, a member of the Tulane University School of Medicine, and Michelle Smith, President of Prism Solutions discussed the applications and strategies to support positive public policies on behalf of children, families, and communities. Together, their goal was to create a group of individuals prepared, confident and enthusiastic about actively participating in affecting public policy The thirty-two participants left with a variety of tools to assist them in developing comprehensive strategies. Family & Youth held the annual Connections Count conference on March 13 and 14. The Foundation was a collaborative partner and responsible for bringing Senator Willie Mount and Representative Chuck Kleckley, along with Michelle Smith, President, Prism Solutions, LLC, Lynda Gavioli, Executive Director of the Children’s Coalition of North East Louisiana and Steven Thibodeaux, Contracts Consultant, Office of Community Services to present a workshop titled “A Legislative Forecast”. The panel, along with participants, discussed the upcoming legislative session.
The Foundation is promoting, a Legislative Day in Baton Rouge on May 9, in collaboration with the LANO Public Policy Conference. Participants will spend the day in Baton Rouge at the State Capitol learning about the inner workings of state government and meeting their legislators. Lunch will be held in the Senate dining room, where we will hear from our legislatures and also discuss how putting mission based advocacy to work in nonprofit organizations will benefit children and families. We are very appreciative of the support from Senator Mount’s and Representative Kleckly’s office. More info. Standards for Excellence – Nonprofit Sector Development Nonprofit Sector Development Series continues as one of The Family Foundation of SWLA’s initiatives to promote Standards for Excellence in the nonprofit sector. A new calendar has just been announced, and runs through September 2007. The following workshops are being promoted by the Foundation, in collaboration with LANO, to the nonprofit sector:
Brochures announcing the workshops are scheduled to be released by mid-April. In addition, the Foundation will promote the workshops through a series of e-mail announcements to Executive Directors of Nonprofit organizations in SWLA. More info. Promotion of Philanthropy Philanthropy Day 2007 was held on March 13, at L’auberge du Lac, to celebrate Philanthropy and to honor four outstanding philanthropists who give of their time, talent and treasure to the community of Southwest Louisiana. Andrew Vanchiere, Chairman of the Family Foundation of Southwest Louisiana Board of Trustees and Vickie Wicks welcomed our guest and did an outstanding job facilitating the event. The guest speakers for the night were Dr. Sherece West, Chief Executive Officer of the Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation and Julia Beatty, Program Manager of the 21st Century Foundation. The 2007 Philanthropist Awards were presented to Bob Chandler by J. Allen McCall for his contribution to United Way of SWLA; Jack Drouilhet presented by Fred Rickman for his contribution to Big Brothers Big Sisters; Linda Wranosky presented by Ann Polak for her contribution to the Calcasieu Women’s Shelter and Carol Collins presented by Jolyn Slate for her contribution to The Literacy Council.
