Self-Sufficiency

Self-Sufficiency: Make available good permanent and temporary jobs to help affected people support themselves and their families.

Current Status:

The Calcasieu Workforce Center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, at 4250 5th Ave. to handle unemployment issues.  They are also taking applications for employment under National Emergency Grant, which pays $9.75 per hour for up to 12 weeks.  Call 475-4900.

100 hours of free training, leading to a career in the construction industry, is available through the Fluor Craft Skills Scholarship Program. Visit www.jobs2help.com for more information.

The Literacy Council has free community learning centers (GED prep, English classes, LA Work Ready Certificates, Financial Basics).  Call 494-7000.

Income eligible residents, especially elderly and those with children under 5 years old, who need assistance with fuel costs cal call the Office of Community Services at 437-3560 or 1-800-542-7064 and ask for LIHEAP services to schedule an appointment.
