Shelter & Housing

Shelter and Housing: Identify and make available safe and affordable housing units for affected individuals as well as assistance in accessing those units and resources.

Current Status:

People who need a travel trailer to live in while their homes are being repaired should contact their insurance companies and FEMA.  To get a FEMA trailer, residents must call 800-621-3362, or go to the Disaster Recovery Center at the Leadership Center, 1701 Ryan, open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Saturday.  You must have power, water and sewerage on site.

People who are in FEMA trailers and have questions or problems regarding the trailer itself, appliances, etc. should call 1-888-860-3362.

People who need temporary housing, or anyone who wants to share their home with displaced people or families or out of town volunteers who are here to help can go to Partners in Prayer for Schools, 629 MLK Highway, Lake Charles, to apply or offer their home. The number is 433-3456.

McNeese Students with housing needs can contact McNeese Student Services, 475-5706, to inquire about placement in a FEMA trailer park at Burton Coliseum.

ETC has apartments available for homeless youth ages 18 to 21.  Call 477-2434 for more information.

SWLA Legal Services, 436-3308, can help people with legal issues arising from the rental of homes and apartments, eviction notices, etc. 

The following homeless shelters are open in Lake Charles:

  • Potters House, 3233 Kirkman, 477-1102, women and children only

  • The Lord’s Place, 126 Kirkman, 494-6277 men only.

  • Carol's House, 2600 Kirkman, 433-2345, all

  • Salvation Army, 721-0762, families

  • City of Refuge in Vinton, 589-4407, men, veterans 

Showers are available at the Foreman-Reynaud Community Center, 215 Albert Street, for those who need them.  Call 436-2509.

Debris cleanup services are available by calling

  • Oak Park United Methodist Church at 478-2290.

  • The SWLA Storm Recovery Station, 480-9911
