2006 Annual Report Children & Families Action Network The Family Foundation of Southwest Louisiana has given voice to children and families by creating the Children and Families Action Network (CFAN). The mission of CFAN is to promote understanding of mission-based advocacy among leaders of nonprofit organizations for the purpose of increasing civic engagement and participation to affect changes in public policy on behalf of children, families, and communities. The Children and Families Action Network can help community leaders increase their success in public policy efforts through mission-based advocacy, partnerships, and issues coordination to become a clear voice for the children and families in Southwest Louisiana. Public policy is affected when people’s voices are united and informed about true community needs. Reasons to Give to the Family Foundation of Southwest Louisiana Southwest Louisiana citizens learned a valuable lesson with the response and the ongoing recovery efforts due to Hurricane Rita. People helped people and communities were supported by nonprofit and faith based organizations. Moreover, the business community responded to the call for action in an admirable way to support the long term recovery of the region and its people. Your tax-deductible contribution to the Endowment Fund of the Family Foundation of Southwest Louisiana supports the programs and services of Family & Youth (www.fyca.org), an organization dedicated to supporting families and communities in Southwest Louisiana. Your planned contribution can help establish an endowment at the Family Foundation of Southwest Louisiana to support your favorite program of Family & Youth, with a minimum pledge. Partnerships and Philanthropy Partnerships with corporations, foundations, and individual donors are of paramount importance to building mission driven philanthropy in Southwest Louisiana. Robert L. Payton, first director of the Center of Philanthropy at Indiana University defines philanthropy as a “voluntary action for the common good.” Nonprofit organizations exist to carry out complex service missions to help people live full and healthy lives in order to thrive and be successful. Your generosity when combined with effective nonprofit work creates a powerful formula for success and serves as a valuable investment in the future of our children, families and community. The Family Foundation of Southwest Louisiana facilitated three initiatives in 2006 which will continue into 2007 and 2008: Nonprofit Sector Development. The foundation believes in promoting excellence in the nonprofit sector through training, education and leadership development in partnership with Entergy Foundation, the Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations and United Way of Southwest Louisiana. Mission Based Advocacy. The foundation seeks to strengthen the capacity of people to engage in effective advocacy to affect public policy on behalf of children and families in partnership with the Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation and the Twenty-First Century Foundation. Philanthropy. The foundation recognizes the value of giving time, talent and treasure and celebrates individuals and their spirit of giving. In addition, the Foundation connects philanthropic efforts to priorities that enhance quality of life, in partnership with L’Auberge du Lac. Finally, thanks to your giving and the expert advice of our trustees we continue to grow the endowment to support the efforts of Family & Youth, a family service organization (www.fyca.org). Philanthropy Day Philanthropy is the act of individual citizens contributing money or goods, along with their time and skills, to promote the well being of others and the betterment of the community in which they live and work. Philanthropy Day, hosted by the Family Foundation of Southwest Louisiana, is an opportunity for nonprofit organizations to honor the people who mean so much to them throughout the year. Foundation Sponsors Conference The Family Foundation of Southwest Louisiana sponsored the Connections Count! Family Focus Professional Development Conference in March. The speakers included Dr. Sherece West, Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation; Julia Beatty, Twenty-First Century Foundation; Allison L. Turkel, Senior Attorney and Chief of Training for the National Center for Prosecution of Child Abuse; Suzy Sonnier, Tulane University School of Medicine; Jean Valliere, LSU Health Sciences Center; Dr. William Eddie Parish, Parish Hermitage, Inc.; James D. Cain, Jr., Loftin, Cain, Gabb & LeBlanc; Terri Theaux, The Psychology Clinic; and Toby Aguillard, Attorney General’s office. Other conference sponsors included Children’s Justice Act, Louisiana Children’s Trust Fund, LANO, L’Auberge du Lac, Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation, and the United Way of Southwest Louisiana. Conference attendance was 153, and 80 attended on scholarships. Foundation’s Assets Family Foundation of Southwest Louisiana is steadily growing.
