April is Autism Awareness Month The Autism Support Alliance is observing Autism Awareness Month in April, with Denim Days for Autism and O’Charley’s restaurant. Throughout the month of April, businesses and schools all over Southwest Louisiana will be participating in Denim Days for Autism, where for a small donation to the Autism Support Alliance the participant can wear denim to work or school. In addition on Monday, April 7, 2008, O’Charley’s resturant will host an Autism Awareness Day and will donate a portion of their proceeds to the Autism Support Alliance Autism is a neurological disorder that affects a person’s ability to communicate, to reason, and to interact with others. One and a half million Americans are diagnosed with autism. Currently, one in 150 babies will be born with autism, and it’s four times more likely to occur in boys. Autism typically appears by age 3 and knows no racial, ethnic, or social boundaries. Autism Support Alliance, a program of Family & Youth, promotes access and opportunities for persons with autism and their families to be fully included as participating members in their communities. In order to achieve this, the alliance offers case management, family guidance, social skills groups, consultation and training. For more information about the Autism Support Alliance services, call 337-436-9533 or visit www.fyca.org. Autism Support Alliance is a program of Family & Youth.
