Children's Health Insurance Outreach Blitz

It is estimated that there are 80,000 children in Louisiana who do not have health insurance, many of them in Southwest Louisiana.  For many of these children, the Louisiana Children's Health Insurance Program (LaCHIP) can provide no cost health care coverage, even if their parents are working.  LaCHIP will pay for doctor visits, prescription medicines, hospitalizations, immunizations, dental, vision, and much more.

In order to reduce the number of uninsured children in Southwest Louisiana, employees of the Department of Health and Hospitals along with LaCHIP outreach coordinators from Family & Youth will conduct a LaCHIP Outreach and Enrollment Blitz during the month of March.  During the blitz, LaCHIP applications will be placed in businesses throughout the five parish area, allowing families to obtain applications and information at locations near their homes.  Families may also enroll their children at parish health units from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the following dates:  Jefferson Davis Parish Health Unit on March 4; Calcasieu Parish Health Unit on March 5; Beauregard Parish Health Unit on March 10; Allen Parish Health Unit on March 12; Cameron Parish Health Unit on March 17.

The American College of Physicians reports that uninsured children are less likely to receive proper medical care for sore throats, ear infections asthma and vision problems, conditions that can impact school attendance and classroom performance.  Children with health coverage are more likely to get the care they need when they need it, and are better prepared to learn in school and succeed in life.  Since 1998 LaCHIP has provided no-cost health coverage to more than 116,000 children whose parents work but cannot afford or are not offered health insurance, and that coverage is available today to many of the children in Southwest Louisiana who are currently uninsured.
