Market Your Mission
by Julio Galan, Executive Director

Your organization’s mission is one of the most important internal and external statements your organization or business can make. The mission statement, among other things, defines the purpose for existing, gives meaning to the guiding values of the organization or business, sets the path to define strategic objectives, supports the investment of resources, and keeps the organization or business honest to its stakeholders.

A clearly defined mission statement leads to successful delivery of the business promise and plan to clients and customers by all those associated with the organization. So, let’s market our mission statement inside and outside of our corporations.

Peter Brinckerhoff, an internationally acclaimed consultant, implies in his book Mission Based Management that businesses earn income and customer loyalty by delivering on their promise to stay true to the mission. He recommends that businesses routinely engage in evaluating their mission by asking questions, including:

  • Has our mission been reviewed by all employees within the last two years?

  • Do we use the mission statement as an aid to decision-making and management?

  • Do we consider the mission statement when considering adding or dropping a service or product?

  • Do we post our mission statement in our buildings or marketing materials?

  • Is our mission statement used as criteria in personnel/company/and marketing evaluations?

It is my experience that a well conducted and inclusive mission review creates a tremendous opportunity for employee involvement, which in turn leads to employees’ increased willingness to market the organization’s mission with pride.
