Partnerships for Hope and Service
by Julio Galan, Executive Director

Now more than ever we must believe that our families and our community possess the capacity to navigate difficult economic times when the right investment and support is available and children’s well-being remains a top priority. Peter Goldberg, CEO of the Alliance for Children and Families, recently stated:

“We must change our world view from half-empty to half-full. We can rightfully see our collapsing economy as leading to persistent poverty, disappearing jobs, strained families, failing schools, and many other social problems. Or, we can instead focus on what can be done and how we can do it together.”

Goldberg goes on to say: “Those of us who work in the citizen sector are ready to act, and we can be so much more effective if we act in true partnership with leaders in business and government.”

Here in Southwest Louisiana, our partners continue to invest in key support services to improve the quality of life in Southwest Louisiana, even in difficult economic times. These partners support us in bringing hope and effective services to children and families. Here are three to name a few:

  • AT&T supports The Leadership Center for Youth’s Youth Action Forum (YAF). YAF is designed to expose high school students to careers, to promote civic engagement and to encourage completion of high school education.

  • Governor’s Drug Free and Safe Communities recently entrusted us with additional funds to support the healthy development of youth through preventive programming to detour youth from drug use and violence.

  • Entergy Foundation believes in the value of the nonprofit sector and invested in training and networking opportunities to further develop the capacity of the sector.

As a United Way supported agency executive, I truly value the commitment and vote of confidence of our partners, and I truly believe that Southwest Louisiana will be a better place for children and families in years to come. Let’s continue to bring hope by investing in cost effective priorities that make a difference in the quality of life.

The Leadership Center for Youth uses funds from the Governor’s Drug Free and Safe Communities program to help provide a safe and drug-free place for teens to gather. Members of The Leadership Center for Youth visited Baton Rouge last May.
