Family Foundation of Southwest Louisiana Recognized Philanthropists for Giving Time, Talent & Treasure

Family Foundation of Southwest Louisiana honored Tim Broussard, Dr. Carlos Choucino, Willie Tempton, Jr. for ConocoPhillips, and Janet Stoma for giving their time, talent, and treasure to the betterment of Southwest Louisiana during the Philanthropy Day Celebration at L’Auberge du Lac on February 11, 2009.

Dr. Carlos Choucino, Willie Tempton, Jr., Janet Stoma, Tim Broussard, and Rep. Chuck Kleckley.

Philanthropy is the act of individual citizens contributing money or goods, along with their time and skills, to promote the well being of others and the betterment of the community in which they live and work.

Tim Broussard has touched many lives through his gracious giving to individuals, and organizations that touch the lives of others. Tim has always been very involved with the community.  As owner of J & J Exterminating Co., Inc., his company is a Partner in Education with S.J. Welsh Middle School and J.J. Johnson School.  He served in various organizations including past President of Christmas in April, the Young Men’s Business Club, Kiwanis Club of South Lake Charles, the Louisiana Pest Control Association, the Planning and Zoning Commission, and the McNeese Quarterback and Diamond Clubs. He has also served on the board of the Sowela Foundation and was 2003’s chairman of the Better Business Bureau.

Dr. Carlos Choucino, the only infectious disease specialist in Southwest Louisiana, willingly accepts the challenges of working with individuals who have been diagnosed with HIV and infectious diseases; as well as consulting with other doctors who have patients with infectious diseases. Born in Peru, he graduated from the School of Biology and School of Medicine at San Marcos University Lima-Peru and interned in Internal Medicine at the Naval Medical Center in Lima, Peru and Southern Illinois University. Dr. Choucino also did a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Vanderbilt University.  In 1995 he began his practice in Lake Charles. Dr. Choucino has been working at Moss Regional Hospital’s HIV Outpatient Clinic, but also with organizations such as the Calcasieu Parish Medical Society Task Force on Indigent Care from 2003 through 2006, the City of Lake Charles Emergency Preparedness Task Force in 2001 until 2003, the Infection Control-Summit Hospital of Southwest Louisiana from 1999 until 2001, and the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury West Nile Task Force since June 2002.  He has been a member of the Southwest Louisiana Aids Council since 1996, has served on the Family & Youth board since 1998, serving as Vice President in 2003 and President in 2004, as well as the Family Foundation of Southwest Louisiana.

Willie Tempton, Jr. accepts this award for ConocoPhillips.  This company maintains a “philanthropic contributions budget” for non-profit, charitable programs closely tied to the company’s corporate goals. The Lake Charles refinery has donated millions of dollars to non-profit organizations and worthy causes, and made countless in-kind contributions over the years.

ConocoPhillips employees proudly support the local United Way, giving more than $250,000 annually.  The ConocoPhillips workforce devotes its time to improve communities.  Whether it’s building an energy efficient home, organizing a Special Olympics game or collecting monies for the ConocoPhillips Assistance and Relief for Employees Fund to help coworkers in times of need, their employees work hard to enrich their communities.  Their employees also serve on boards or as members of many types of organizations including non-profits, local religious organizations, and various business groups.  ConocoPhillips employees have received numerous fund raising awards, including top relay team from the American Heart Association. ConocoPhillips Lake Charles is a partner in Education with Westlake High School and recently adopted LaGrange Senior High, following the closure of Lake Charles Boston.

ConocoPhillips donated $2 million to the Hurricane Rita Relief, $2 million to Sowela reconstruction efforts, $250,000 Hurricane Ike Relief, and $60,000 to Friend Ships. Annually, ConocoPhillips gives $10,000 to McNeese Banners Series, $10,000 Special Olympics, $10,000 to McNeese Engineering Program, and $10,000 Chamber of Southwest Louisiana.

Janet Stoma has given much of her time, talent, and treasure to many organizations in our community.  She has served on the boards of St. Louis Blues, Serra Club, Calcasieu Community Clinic, Family & Youth, Crime Victims Reparation, and the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre. She also served as Camp Fire Leader for more than 20 years, Chairman of the St. Louis Golden Bingo as well as St. Louis’ 25th Anniversary, and served as President for several years for the Immaculate Conception Cathedral Alter Society.

She is probably most noted for her “event planning and decorating!”  She has spent tireless hours decorating and baking.  She has always been generous, monetarily, with every organization she is involved with.  She (and the organization that she is working with at the time) have been very fortunate to have the support of her husband in many ways … including ticket selling!

Philanthropy Day is a national celebration that recognizes the profound impact that philanthropy has on the fabric of society.  This is the fifth year the foundation has honored local philanthropists who, through their hard work and dedication, enhance Southwest Louisiana.
