Pictured are Peter Goldberg, CEO, Alliance for Children & Families; Julio Galan, Executive Director, Family & Youth; Mark Lieberman, Alliance Conference Planning Comm.; Tom Morris, President, United Way of SWLA; and Laurie Anne Spagnola, Alliance Conference Co-chair. Full story see A Time to Celebrate. National Family Week Nov. 18-24, 2007 Family & Youth joined the Alliance for Children & Families in celebrating National Family Week. The National Family Week premise is that children live better lives when their families are strong, and families are strong when they live in communities that connect them to economic opportunities, social networks, and services. Connections include: economic self-sufficiency, family sustaining jobs, dependable transportation, reliable child care, accessible health care, applicable education and training, and affordable housing. Family & Youth supported the national effort by bringing awareness to the importance of advocacy work on behalf of children and families. A mission-based advocacy training session “Engaging the Media on Mission Work” was held at L’Auberge du Lac on Nov. 20, 2007. Linda Nguyen, the Director of Civic Engagement with the Alliance for Children & Families discussed media relations. She stressed following the news and being opportunistic by calling editors when your organization can lend a local angle to a big story, and having an interview with a volunteer or client lined up before pitching a human interest story. In addition, Child Advocate Night on Nov. 20, 2007, recognized the efforts of Becky Perry, a Court Appointed Special Advocate, and Tammy Vincent a member of the Children’s Advocacy Center team for their work with children. Tammy Bailey Vincent, RN is a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. Becky Perry is a Court Appointed Special Advocate from Vinton.
Linda Nguyen also presented Family &
Youth with the Building Evangeline Ordinario received the National Family Week Advocacy Award because of her wide range of civic, religious and philanthropic activities on behalf of children and families.
National Family Week is not just a
time-defined event or activity; it is an ongoing initiative designed
to foster a change process that will, over time, educate families
and engage allies at all levels to think and act differently with
respect to public policy, private investment, and civic action on
behalf of families. Dr. Ordinario accepts the National Family Week Advocacy Award on behalf of his wife, Evangeline Ordinario, from Linda Nguyen, Director of Civic Engagement for the Alliance for Children & Families and David Duplechian, Associate Executive Director for Family & Youth.
