A Family Celebration
by David Duplechian, Associate Executive Director

A Family Celebration. Usually around the holidays, maybe a birthday, or an annual vacation. A time to bond, to grow, to celebrate, to create memories that will last a lifetime. Something every abused and neglected child longs for. When children are removed from home due to abuse and neglect, there’s nothing to celebrate, and the memories created are best forgotten.

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) recognizes that foster care is not a place to grow up, and CASA volunteers work hard on behalf of their children to ensure that what needs to happen does, and that it happens timely. While we see a lot of tragedy and heartbreak, the CASA family does have celebrations to cherish - the day children are adopted into loving homes, or when appropriate, reunited with their families and being able to move on with their lives. Those memories push aside the haunting ones, and make all the effort on behalf of these special children worthwhile.

Perhaps you’ve volunteered in the past and helped create these family celebrations, or made a donation in support of CASA. Or perhaps, as in the case of Sam Hebert, you’ve done both. Sam came to us with a desire to help children, completed the CASA training, and worked a case. Then Sam came to us again and wanted to do more, and Dinner at Mi CASA was born. Sam and Denise Hebert opened their home three times this year to host dinner parties in support of CASA, giving us a chance not only to raise money in support of our volunteers and the children we serve, but also to raise awareness in our community about the plight of abused and neglected children. On behalf of the CASA children who can now have a family celebration because of their generosity, thanks to Sam and Denise Hebert for all they do. To learn how you can help, please contact our CASA staff at 436-9533.
