National Family Week Celebration: Child Advocate Night Hosted by Family & Youth

Family & Youth hosted Child Advocate Night, an event honoring individuals who serve abused and neglected children in Southwest Louisiana through the Children's Advocacy Center and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).

The 2009 Light of Hope awards were presented to Cynthia Clay Guillory Lands and Christine Dutridge.

Cynthia Clay Guillory Lands, a juvenile prosecutor with the Calcasieu Parish District Attorney’s Office, works with the Children’s Advocacy Center on behalf of abused children.  Previously she worked with the Louisiana District Attorneys Association, where she was instrumental in rewriting Child Support Guidelines and other legislation affecting children and families.  She is described as hardworking and passionate about keeping children safe.

Two years ago when Christine Dutridge became a CASA volunteer she took the CASA purpose to heart. Her tremendous dedication to the children she serves is evidenced by the 200 activity hours, 92 training hours and 4,431.3 miles she has given to CASA.  Christine organizes a Christmas toy drive with local industries for CASA children, providing age-appropriate toys for children who have been removed from their home due to abuse or neglect.

The Children’s Advocacy Center is a child-friendly facility designed to coordinate services for children who have been reported as sexually or severely physically abused. Designed and managed to reduce the effects of trauma, the Center’s comfortable environment and well-trained staff work together with area prosecutors, law enforcement agents, child protection investigators, social service workers, therapists, victims’ advocates and medical professionals to investigate child abuse allegations and reduce the number of investigative interviews typically experienced by victims.  The Children’s Advocacy Center is a program of Family & Youth.

CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to advocate in court on behalf of abused or neglected children.  The volunteer helps to ensure that the best interests of the child are considered while he or she is in foster care.  Volunteers are trained and supported by CASA staff at Family & Youth.
