The Leadership Center for Youth Impacting 8,000 Youth in Southwest Louisiana

The 2009-2010 school year is coming to an end, and the staff at The Leadership Center

 for Youth (TLC) has been quite busy. TLC staff continued and built upon their relationships with teachers, counselors, staff, and students in 23 schools throughout the five-parish area. They consistently provided leadership development, anger management, and positive action education to more than 8,000 youth in 10 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, and 5 high schools throughout 2009-2010 school year.

Some of the most loved and asked for activities by students and staff were those that focused on communication and listening skills, teamwork, and problem solving. Each activity/lesson presented by TLC staff proposed a “hands on” approach to learning. Many times, students would ask, “What does this activity have to do with building up my leadership skills or abilities,” but once the activity was concluded (either successfully or unsuccessfully) they could answer that question for themselves. One of the greatest rewards in working with youth through leadership development comes from that moment, that moment when youth are able to form a cohesive answer for themselves.

Although the year is coming to a close, TLC staff will still be hard at work, focusing their energy on new summer programs. TLC will provide ten weeks of leadership development training to ten recreation centers throughout the City of Lake Charles, as well as offer in-house leadership development sessions geared towards: career exploration, learning circles, positive action, and anger management. The sessions are open to youth between the ages of 10 -17.
