Building Stronger Families by Brenda Gueringer, MA, Director of Counseling Many frustrated parents have asked the question: Why don’t children come with instruction manuals?
To help ease this frustration, Family &
Youth offers Parenting 101, a six-week basic parenting
skills course. In an interesting and interactive group setting,
participants will discuss safe environments, nurturing, positive
communication, discipline, stress management, and anger management.
Join working parents, stay-at-home moms, married couples, and single
parents on the journey to better parenting. First time parents and
seasoned veterans come looking for new knowledge and to enhance the
skills. Even a few grandparents, foster parent Parenting 101 also serves as a support system for parents. Participants share their parenting challenges and successes in a safe and supportive atmosphere. Parents often learn they aren’t the only ones who have dealt with a particular issue and that what works for one child may not work for another. Solutions are emphasized rather than focusing on problems. Personal strengths are encouraged and reinforced which enhances parental self-esteem. This in turn increases a participant’s desire and ability to be a better parent raising healthier, more confident children. Family & Youth has also begun a bi-monthly series of parenting seminars called Smart Parenting Future seminars will cover topics such as “Children and the Internet: Do You Know Where Your Children Are?” and “How to Talk So Your Kids Will Listen and How to Listen So Your Kids Will Talk”. Most parents have the ability to be great parents, but many need the tools to help them realize their capacity. If you or someone you know would like more information on how to make a good home, a better home and a happy family, a healthy family, call 436-9533.
